Breve descripción de contenidos (Según memoria de verificación del Máster)

This course offers a theoretical and practical introduction to research methods in linguistics. The course focuses, mainly though not exclusively, on corpus-based research methods in linguistics and addresses how these can help investigate a variety of aspects in English linguistics, such as the compiling and analysis of corpora. Corpus-based approaches to the study of language are complemented by qualitative approaches to a variety of discourse in English too. Crucially, this course also addresses aspects of academic writing in linguistics including the analysis of papers in linguistics, how to structure a paper as well as how to present the hypothesis, aims, methods and results of linguistics research.

Prerrequisitos y/o Recomendaciones

Dado que todo el programa se imparte en inglés, un requisito básico es tener un buen conocimiento de este idioma, equivalente a un nivel de competencia
de C1, tal y como éste viene definido por el Marco Común Europeo de Referencia.

  • To identify the most appropriate framework of analysis and data for a particular research project.
  • To find the most suitable corpora for a particular research project if a corpus approach is chosen.
  • To learn about some of the most commonly used pieces of software for corpus-based research.
  • To sample, collect and process data in linguistics if an experimental approach is chosen.
  • To understand the basics of project design in linguistics irrespective of whether the focus is on quantitative or qualitative research.
  • To learn basic concepts of statistical analysis.
  • To learn the basics of literature reviews in linguistics and to learn how to apply that knowledge to their own research/dissertation.
  • To learn how to structure a research paper in linguistics according to basic academic conventions (planning, organization, drafting, editing).
  • To learn how to present the aims, methods and results of research in linguistics clearly.

Assessment is based on the completion of two essays:

  1. Qualitative vs. quantitative approaches (50%)

In about 1500-2000 words, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of quantitative and qualitative approaches to the analysis of discourse. Your discussion should be based on, at least, six examples (three using qualitative and three using quantitative methods) of reputable linguistic research.

  1. Design a corpus-based research project (50%)

In about 1500-2000 words, design a research project to analyse (any kind of) discourse. You are not expected to take on the actual analysis but to describe how you would undertake it. You are expected to formulate the research question(s)/hypothesis, describe your data, choose a framework of analysis and explain what and how you would analyse that data. Your piece must include appropriate references.

Información adicional

Según establece el Artículo 15 de la Normativa de Evaluación y Calificación de la Universidad de Granada: "El plagio, entendido como la presentación de un trabajo u obra hecho por otra persona como propio o la copia de textos sin citar su procedencia y dándolos como de elaboración propia, conllevará automáticamente la calificación numérica de cero en la asignatura en la que se hubiera detectado, independientemente del resto de las calificaciones que el estudiante hubiera obtenido. Esta consecuencia debe entenderse sin perjuicio de las responsabilidades disciplinarias en las que pudieran incurrir los estudiantes que plagien." En línea con la normativa de la UGR expuesta en el párrafo anterior, es necesario aclarar que, al igual que con cualquier otro tipo de plagio, el incumplimiento del compromiso de autoría por parte del/de la estudiante debido a la utilización de recursos no humanos (por ejemplo, aplicaciones informáticas de Inteligencia Artificial) conllevará igualmente la calificación automática de SUSPENSO (0) en la asignatura, así como las responsabilidades disciplinarias que esta acción pueda acarrear.
